The Ram Band program operates under the following philosophy: The discipline and artistry developed through musicanship provides vital skills in the pursuit of human potential. Our program is dedicated to achieving the highest level of musical excellence we are capable of. In accordance with the mission statement of Johnston High School, the Ram Band presents these objectives: 1) To develop in the student the ability to work effectively with others toward a common objective. 2) To fster an appreciation and understanding of music that will enhance the lives of our students. 3) To provide students with opportunities for musical expression while fosering a respect for and an appreciation of culture. 4) Through the pursuit of musical excellance to develop skills and attitudes which will help maked the student a positive and productive member of society. | ||||||||||||||||||
| PERFORMING ENSEMBLES | |||||||||||||||||||

MARCHING BAND The marching band is made up of all band members in grades 9-12. Summer band rehearsals befin the end of July and continue until school starts. The marching band will perform at all football games, UIL contest and Capital City Marching Festival. SYMPHONIC BAND This is the top performing organization at Johnston High School. Instrumentation is limited and membership is by audition only. Exemplary musicianship and attitude is required to sustain membership in the group. This ensemble competes in UIL competition in April. All students in this organization are encouraged to participate in Region Band tryouts and UIL Solo & Ensemble. CONCERT BAND This is the second performing organization at Johnston High School. Continued musical growth and development is expected of all members. Prior band experience is required. JAZZ ENSEMBLE All members of the ensembles must also be members of the marching ad concert organizations with exception of pianists and guitarists who have not previously been involved in band. Membership is by auditon and/or director's permission only. COLORGUARD/WINTERGUARD The colorguard is a unique component of the marching band comprised of band and non-band students. Rehearsal schedule is the same as for marching band in the fall semester with some extra time commitments. Winterguard is a continuation of the colorguard experience in the spring semester. It is a competitive unit and activity independent of the concert bands. Membership is by audition and open to all band and non-band students. | ||||||||||||||||||
| INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS | |||||||||||||||||||

ALL-STATE BAND AND ORCHESTRA All band members are encouraged to participate in the region Band, Orchestra, and Jazz auditions. Any student that pursues membership in a region ensemble will have benefited him or herself and made the Ram Band a stronger organization. Patches are awarded to any student that makes either the Symphonic, Concert, or non-performing District Band. UIL SOLO & ENSEMBLE CONTEST All band members are encouraged to participate in the UIL Solo/Ensemble Contest which normally occurs in late February. Solos and ensembles are organized in December and January. All students earning first divisions will receive medals. Solos and Ensembles making first divisions on Class One solos or ensembles qualify to copete in the State Contes held in Austin in the late spring (May 28-June1 normally). | ||||||||||||||||||
